Speakers including cultural activists, politicians, academics, professionals at a discussion on Friday said that language movement veteran, poet, essayist and Rabindra researcher Ahmed Rafiq promoted social ownership of wealth instead of capitalistic ideas.
They also said that Ahmed Rafiq was a social revolutionist who worked for changes and donated almost all of his property to universities and organisations.聽
A commemoration meeting on Ahmed Rafiq was organised by Bhasha Sangrami Ahmed Rafiq Shok shava Jatiya Committee at Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium in Bangla Academy.
The event was chaired by Dhaka University professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury who also the convener of the committee while Ahmed Rafiq Foundation president Munir Siraj delivered welcome speech at the event.聽
Serajul Islam Choudhury said that language movement veteran Rabindra researcher Ahmed Rafiq was a social revolutionist who worked for social changes. He added that Ahmed Rafiq wrote the history of language movement impartially and worked for developing Bengali language and literature.
Former president of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim said that Ahmed Rafiq believed in socialism and freedom of humans in the truest form.
Professor Syed Azizul Huq said that Ahmed Rafiq was one of the creative hubs of the post-language movement who worked on language, literature and education.
The committee also published a souvenir on life and work of Ahmed Rafiq at the event.
Born on September 12, 1929 in Shahbazpur under Brahmanbaria district, Rafiq was a prominent figure in the historic 1952 Language Movement. His literary works include Nirbasita Nayak, Shilpa Sangskriti Jiban, Nazrul Kabye Jibansadhana, Arek Kalantare and Nirbachita Rabindranath.
The revered author received Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy Literary Award, among several other awards.
Ahmed Rafiq passed away at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka on October 2 at the age of 96.
