A man was hit to death with a hammer during a arbitration convened to settle a dispute over harvesting paddy on a land in a village under Magura Sadar upazila on Friday.

The incident occurred at about 12:30pm on Friday in Boluk village under Kuchiamora union of the upazila, said the police.


The deceased was identified as Badsha Mollah, 50, a resident of  Boluk village.

Magura sadar police station officer-in-charge Ayub Ali said that the incident occurred during arbitration that was held on Friday afternoon following a land-related dispute.

Local people rescued Badsha and took him to Magura Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead, he said.

‘Tension is prevailing in the area and additional police were deployed to control the situation,’ the police official added.

According to local people, a dispute broke out between sharecropper Anwar Hossain and landowner Shiuli Khatun on Thursday over the right to paddy harvesting on a land.

During the arbitration, Anwar’s son Abir got agitated and hit Shiuli’s maternal uncle Badsha Mollah on the head with a hammer.

Right after the incident Shiuli’s supporters set fire to Anwar’s house, eyewitnesses said.

The body was sent for autopsy, OC Ayub said, adding that no case had been filed as of Friday evening, but the police were trying to arrest those involved.
