The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday called upon the interim government to adopt a fully-fledged caretaker government mode.
It also stressed urgency and impartiality of the administration ahead of the coming Jatiya Sangsad elections, scheduled for the first half of February 2026.
Following a meeting with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna , BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir outlined the party’s key demands and concerns while talking to reporters.
‘We have demanded the removal of any partisan individuals remaining in the government in order to fully maintain the government’s impartiality,’ he said.
Asked whether any specific advisers had been named during their discussions, Fakhrul said that no individual advisers had been singled out.
The current interim government, Fakhrul said, immediately need to assume the role of a caretaker government.
A caretaker government refers to a non-partisan government during an election period, which would conduct elections within three months after the tenure of a government and carry out only routine government work.
The BNP demanded a complete restructuring of the central administration, urging that those identified as allies of the ousted fascist government at the secretariat must be removed.
The BNP demanded that the allies of the ousted fascist government in the higher administration must be replaced with impartial officials while similar measures must also be implemented in the district administration, Fakhrul said.
The BNP delegation also raised concerns over politically influenced police recruitments and promotions.
BNP secretary general demanded that all new appointments and promotions in the police should be conducted in a manner that guarantees absolute impartiality.
The chief adviser told the BNP leaders that, as the adviser in charge of the public administration ministry, all administrative transfers and appointments before the elections would be directly under his supervision, according to a statement issued by the CA’s press wing.
The statement said that the chief adviser discussed with the BNP leaders the government’s preparations for the Jatiya Sangsad elections to be held next February.
Professor Yunus assured the leaders that in appointing deputy commissioners, officials would be selected based on merit and assigned to appropriate positions prior to the election.
As part of the ongoing political dialogue, the chief adviser would hold a meeting with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami delegation today.
During the meeting, BNP leaders called for any controversial officials — particularly those who had held election-related responsibilities under the authoritarian Awami League rule — to be barred from participating in the upcoming election.
The chief adviser said that the government’s responsibility was to remain impartial, citing that an election was a major event and that whoever were capable of maintaining peace and order would be chosen for polls duties.
Professor Yunus said that this would be under his supervision and that the government would do whatever was necessary to ensure a peaceful and impartial election.
Calling for the removal of fascist associates from the judiciary, the BNP requested that neutral judges be appointed in their places.
Acknowledging the importance of the judiciary’s independence, Fakhrul said that they stressed the chief adviser’s overarching responsibility in safeguarding the neutrality of all state institutions.
BNP standing committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed, law adviser Asif Nazrul, planning adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, and industries adviser Adilur Rahman Khan were present at the meeting.
