A woman was arrested in Satkhira’s Kolaroa upazila for allegedly killing her five-day-old daughter by throwing her in a canal in despair after she had given birth to a third girl child.
The incident happened at around 3:30pm Monday in Raghunathpur village under Helatala union of the upazila.
According to the police, accused Sharmin Sultana, 26, wife of Md Ibrahim Khalil of Raghunathpur village, initially claimed that the baby had been abducted while she was asleep.
Later, during questioning, she confessed to throwing the infant into a nearby canal covered with water hyacinths.
Based on her information, police and Detective Branch members recovered the baby’s body at about 11:00pm near Kazirhat High School.
Kolaroa police officer-in-charge Sheikh Saiful Islam said that Sharmin told them that she and her husband already had two daughters aged five and one and a half years old and were hoping for a son this time.
Despaired over the birth of a girl once again, she threw the baby into the canal.
A resident of Raghunathpur village Sardar Monsur Ali said that the baby had been born through a Caesarean section just five days earlier.
The parents’ behaviour seemed suspicious when they reported the baby missing, he added.
He also said that the victim’s father, Ibrahim Khalil was originally from Shyamnagar and was living in Raghunathpur with his wife’s parents.
The victim’s grandmother Khadija Khatun, wife of Sufinur Rahman, filed a murder case against Sharmin.
The police sent Sharmin to Satkhira jail following a court order and sent the body for DNA testing.
