
Five new national records were set on the opening day of the 34th National Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Championships at the Mirpur National Swimming Complex on Saturday.
Navy swimmer Kajol Mia set a new national record in the men鈥檚 200m freestyle, clocking 01:55.06 seconds to break Mahfizur Rahman鈥檚 record of 01:58.44 seconds in 2016.聽
He also set a new record in the men鈥檚 200m butterfly event with timing of 02:05.95 seconds breaking his old national mark of 02:09.41 seconds last year.
Samiul Islam Rafi of Navy also made two national records, clocking 26.05 seconds in the 50m backstroke to break his previous record.聽
He set another record in the 100m freestyle relay alongside Nahid, Nur Alam and Asif Reja with a timing of 03:32.18 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of 03:35.85 seconds.
In the women鈥檚 category, Navy鈥檚 Maisha Juthi, Annie and Sonia combined to set a new record in the 100m freestyle relay, erasing the old mark of 04:25.83 seconds.
After the opening day, Navy were leading the medals tally with eight golds, five silvers and six bronzes, followed by Bangladesh Army with three golds, while BKSP were in third place with one gold.
A total of 816 participants, including 595 swimmers from 67 teams representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, BKSP, Ansar and various district and divisional associations.
