Rishad Hossain became the first Bangladeshi right arm wrist spinner to take a five-wicket haul as the hosts beat West Indies by 74 runs in a low-scoring first ODI of the series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.Ìý

Bangladesh managed 207 in 49.4 overs, where Rishad played a cameo of 26 runs off 13 balls. The touring side were then all out for 133 in 39 overs, despite being 51-0 at one stage, as Rishad took 6-35 in nine overs.

Rishad broke the opening stand of 51 runs between Alick Athanaze and Brandon King when he trapped the former lbw in the 12th over.Ìý

King added 28 runs with Keacy Carty before Rishad broke through again. After Carty was caught at slip off Rishad, mayhem followed.Ìý

King, who top-scored with 44 runs, Sherfane Rutherford, and Roston Chase were all caught behind. Chase became Rishad’s fifth scalp, while the 23-year-old Bangladeshi became the first leg-spinner to grab the first five wickets of an opposition.Ìý

Mustafizur Rahman, who took two, along with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam, shared four wickets between them. Rishad finished the innings when Jayden Seales was caught at slip.Ìý

Earlier, Bangladesh slipped to 8-2 in 2.1 overs as Saif Hasan and Soumya Sarkar fell cheaply after they were sent to bat first on a tricky wicket.Ìý

Saif was trapped lbw by Romario Shepherd, while Soumya pushed a full-length delivery straight to the point off Jayden Seales.

Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy added 71 runs off 120 balls for the third wicket to rebuild the innings.Ìý

Shanto remained on the backfoot to a delivery off Khary Pierre that turned and was trapped lbw after making 32 off 63. Hridoy, who struck the only fifty of the innings, was caught behind off pacer Justin Greaves before adding 36 runs with debutant Mahidul Islam. Ìý

Mahidul fought in his innings of 46 runs from 76 balls and added 43 runs with captain, Mehidy. He was bowled by Roston Chase.Ìý

However, those three partnerships in the middle phase enabled Rishad to blitz some fireworks towards the end.Ìý

Bangladesh innings consisted of three sixes and among those Rishad hit two while Tanvir Islam struck the other. Those helped Bangladesh to cross the 200-run mark.Ìý

Jayden Seales was the most successful bowler for West Indies with three wickets, while Pierre made the biggest impact by claiming 1-19.

The second match of the three-match series will be held at the same venue on Tuesday.Ìý
