Former prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia has been admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for a routine medical check-up.

She was taken to the hospital from her Gulshan residence at about 11:40pm on Wednesday night.

BNP standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain briefed reporters on late Wednesday, providing an update on the former prime minister’s condition.

He confirmed that Khaleda Zia had been brought in for a series of tests after a meeting with her medical board earlier that morning.

She underwent several tests overnight and more were scheduled for the following day.

‘At present, the medical team has recommended that she remains hospitalised,’ Zahid said.

He described Khaleda Zia’s condition as stable. Though the board has emphasised the need for continued examinations before any decision regarding her discharge can be made.

According to Zahid, she is currently being treated in a private cabin under the supervision of Professor Shahabuddin Talukder.

‘We are hopeful that the medical board may possibly grant her permission to return home within the next day or two,’ Zahid said.

Khaleda Zia is suffering from multiple chronic and serious health conditions.

These include chronic kidney disease, a heart block, and liver complications.
