A case has been filed against 13 individuals, including 10 officials of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, on charges of torturing a couple during an interrogation related to the July Uprising.
Sabina Yasmin, one of the alleged victims, lodged the complaint with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, said her lawyer, Md Zakir Hossain.
After recording her statement, Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the allegations and submit a report by November 11.
The accused foundation officials are senior verification officer Iftikhar Hossain, officers Sagar, Mehedi Hasan Prince, Afzalu Rahman Sayem, Saidur Rahman Shahid, Fatema Afrin Payel, Reza Tanvir, Alif, and Jahid, and executive member Sabrina Afroz Srabonti.
The other accused are Sonia Akhter Lubna, Rakin, and Shamim Reza Khan, whose designations could not be known immediately.
According to the case statement, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 19, 2024, Sabina’s husband, Bulbul Sikder, sustained a severe leg injury, while their son suffered a severed nerve in his leg on the Dhaka–Chittagong Road.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, the couple visited the foundation’s office on March 20 this year seeking recognition and compensation as July Uprising victims.
There, Iftikhar and several others allegedly interrogated them, took Bulbul to a separate room, and tortured him for hours. Sabina was also reportedly beaten and threatened.
The accused branded them as ‘fake July warriors,’ tried to force false confessions, and seized Sabina’s bag and mobile phone, the complaint said. Bulbul later suffered mental trauma and required medical treatment.
Responding to the allegations, the foundation’s chief executive officer, Kamal Akbar, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Sabina and Bulbul had been accused of paying a woman from Narayanganj to include Bulbul as a ‘July warrior.’
He said the woman was earlier jailed in a case filed by the foundation for endorsing fake July warriors and had recently been released on bail.
‘Sabina and her husband came to the foundation on March 20, and some July warriors protested after learning about the allegation. One of our officials, Shahid, helped them leave the office safely,’ Kamal said.
‘I don’t know why the case was filed six months after the incident. The CID can investigate, and if anyone is found guilty, the foundation will not shield them. All the accused are dedicated officials,’ he added.
The July Shaheed Smrity Foundation was launched on September 17, 2024, with an initial fund of Tk 100 crore from the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund to support victims of the July Uprising.
