Leaders of three Islamic parties at a human chain in Dhaka on Tuesday called for a referendum on July Charter before the next election and the holding of the election with proportional representation system.
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish had formed the human chain, from Jatrabari to Gabtali, for an hour from 11:00am to push their five-point demands.
Central leaders of the parties joined in the human chain near Matsya Bhaban, where Jamaat’s nayeb-e-amir Abdullah Mohammad Taher called on the government to meet their demands.
‘We would wage a greater movement if the government does not meet our demands,’ he warned.
The government must ensure the legal ground for the July Charter and proportional representation in general election, he said.
He also demanded a level playing field for all political parties and a ban of the politics of parties in the Awami League-led alliance.
Jamaat’s city north amir Nurul Islam Bulbul chaired the gathering where Islami Andolan presidium member Ashraf Alin Akand and others spoke.
Islami Andolan leaders also held a rally in Shapla Square at Motijheel where the party’s joint secretary general Gazi Ataur Rahman said that the election must be held with proportional representation system.
The party’s central leaders Mahbubur Rahman, Ashraful Alam, Fazle Bari Masud and others also spoke.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish leaders and activists also joined the human chain.
The parties also formed human chains in all cities.
The parties will also form human chains in all district towns today to push for their demands.
