Anti-Corruption Commission chair Muhammad Abdul Momen on Tuesday urged political parties not to give nominations to anyone in exchange for money in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad elections.
He also called upon all political parties to refrain from nominating people with records of corruption in the next JS elections, scheduled to be held in the first half of February 2026.
The ACC chief made the remarks while inaugurating a workshop titled ‘Role of Media in Preventing Corruption’ organised by the commission for members of the Reporters Against Corruption at the ACC headquarters in Dhaka.
He also said that the fight against corruption became difficult when political parties nominated corrupt people.
If the parties remained cautious in this regard, it would be possible to effectively combat corruption in the country, he added.
About the laundered money, Momen said that although it is difficult to recover the laundered money, the commission and other relevant government agencies are making relentless efforts to bring back the laundered money from abroad.
Responding to a question from reporters, the ACC chair said that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, like all other offenders, would face justice over the graft allegations.
Momen also said that during the Awami League rule, many influential businessmen had tried to almost bankrupt the country through corruption.
Now the commission is fearlessly continuing its investigations into those corrupt practices, he added.
‘Various legal measures, including issuing red notices through Interpol, have been taken to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her family members, and other fugitive corrupt people,’ he said.
Journalists, Momen said, work to ensure good governance in the country while killing a journalist is like killing democracy.
At the workshop, ACC director general (Special Investigation) Mir Md. Zainul Abedin Shibli and DG (Training and Information Technology) Abdullah Al Zahid discussed the Anti-Corruption Commission Act-2004, Anti-Corruption Commission Rules-2007, Prevention of Corruption Act-1947, Money Laundering Act-2012 and other related laws and regulations.
ACC DG (administration) Abu Hena Mustafa Zaman, and RAC president Alauddin Arif, and general secretary Tabarul Haque were also present at the inauguration session of the daylong workshop.
