Students of Dhaka College on Tuesday morning blockaded the capital鈥檚 Science Laboratory intersection, protesting at the assault of a higher secondary student and harassment of a teacher amid tensions over the proposed merger of seven major government colleges into a new entity named Dhaka Central University.

The blockade, which began around 10:00am, saw participation from Higher Secondary students of Dhaka College along with students from other government colleges who joined in solidarity.

The blockade caused a complete halt in traffic in the area, leading to severe congestion on Mirpur Road and adjoining streets during the demonstration.

Around 11:30am, Dhaka College principal AKM Ilias Hossain persuaded the students to withdraw the blockade, after which they brought out a procession towards New Market. Later, vehicular movement in the area resumed.

Meanwhile, members of the Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) Association on Tuesday observed a daylong work abstention across all government colleges, madrassahs, and offices, wearing black badges in protest against the harassment of the teacher.
