Chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission Professor SMA Faiz at a programme in Gazipur on Monday called on the university teachers to increase their involvement with students to improve relations.

He made the call as chief guest on the inaugural day of a four-month basic training with the aim of enhancing the capacity of new teachers of various universities in the country and improving the quality of education in line with modern times, said a press release.

The training began at the Central Training and Conference Centre of Bangladesh Open University. Thirty lecturers and 30 assistant professors from 40 public and private universities are participating in this training.

He said that university teachers should be more involved with students to understand the aspirations and needs of students.

He also commented that ensuring the welfare of students should be the main task of teachers.

‘Work is underway to organise timely training for university teachers and to build an ideal training centre for them,’ he mentioned.

Presided over by UGC member Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, the commission members Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Professor Masuma Habib, Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam and BOU vice-chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam spoke as special guests at the ceremony.

Tanzimuddin Khan said that training of teachers was very necessary for improving student-teacher relations, self-development and self-analysis.

He called on university teachers to participate in this training with an open mind and identify the weak points of the training. ‘This training will help change the thinking of teachers, create networks for professional development and learn about the research content of various universities.’

Anwar Hossain believes that it is necessary to examine how effective it is in improving the quality of education and making students workable human resources.

He commented that improving the quality of education and determining the needs of students should be the main objectives of this training.

Professor Masuma Habib said that training had been organised centrally for university teachers under the HIT project.

‘I think this is a positive aspect,’ she said, adding that teachers needed training in various subjects, including improving the quality of education and research.

Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam said that no one came to the teaching profession in universities with specialised skills.

‘This has to be achieved through training,’ he said, adding that this demand had been unfulfilled for so long.

Professor Obaidul Islam said that there was no long-term training programme in the country to improve the professional skills of university teachers.

I believe that this training programme under the supervision of UGC will play an important role in improving the skills of teachers.
