
Bangladesh’s rising tennis star Zarif Abrar made a strong start to the main draw of the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior J-30 Dhaka, which began at the National Tennis Complex in Ramna on Sunday.
Zarif, who lifted the title of the Rajshahi phase of the same tournament just a week earlier, carried his fine form into Dhaka, easing past Thailand’s Panawat 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets in the first round.
The 17-year-old expressed confidence about maintaining his winning momentum throughout the week-long competition.
Top-ranked Chuan Ding of China thrashed Bangladesh’s Mahad Bin Malek 6-1, 6-2 to move into the second round.
Obinash, who came through the qualifiers, has been eliminated after a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to Thailand’s Theerapat, while Sayem also made exit after losing to another Thai player, Chanapath.
In the girls’ singles, Sumiya Akter battled past India’s Yashitha, taking the first set 6-4 before dominating the second 6-0 to secure her second-round berth.Ìý
Fellow Bangladeshi Halima Jahan also progressed by beating India’s Sara Shaikh 6-2, 6-3 in a convincing fashion.
The week-long event will feature boys’ and girls’ singles as well as doubles competitions.Ìý
