Teachers of the secondary-level schools under the government monthly pay order system on Monday started a non-stop sit-in on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in Dhaka, demanding pay hike.

Though they also threatened to go for countrywide work abstention for an indefinite period from Monday, in Dhaka academic activities remained normal at many schools under MPO system.

The teachers however said that they supported the movement.

Earlier on Sunday, police dispersed the teachers using water cannon, hurling sound grenades and charging batons on them in the capital as they blocked the road in front of the National Press Club.

Under the banner of MPO-bhukto Shikkha Jatiyakaran Pratyashi Jote, a platform of the MPO teachers seeking nationalisation, hundreds of teachers are protesting in Dhaka demanding 20 per cent increase in the house rent allowance, Tk 1,500 as medical allowance and an increase in the festival allowance for employees from the current 50 per cent to 75 per cent.

Since Sunday night many teachers were seen sleeping on Central Shaheed Minar premises.

On Monday morning they started their protest programme holding banners.

The protesting teachers were scheduled hold work abstention programme in the schools across the country.

Teachers of Nilkhet High School and Dhanmondi High School said that though they continued their academic activities in their schools, they supported the protest.
