The Chittagong University administration on Saturday imposed restrictions on the entry of outsiders to the campus ahead of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union election, saying that the measure was for ensuring free, fair and peaceful polls.

The decision was announced in a notice, signed by the university proctor Professor Dr Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy and circulated on the day, which said the administration would strictly control the entry of outsiders as the CUCSU election was to be held after 36 years.

It said that the university administration and law enforcement agencies would reserve the authority to search anyone if deemed suspicious.

The notice asked the students, teachers, officers and employees of the university to carry their identity cards or bank deposit receipts at all times and to show them when moving inside the campus during the election period.

Proctor Professor Shohrowardhy said that they were fully committed to conducting the polls peacefully.

‘This measure has been taken to maintain security and discipline on the campus,’ he told journalists on Saturday.

This year’s CUCSU election, scheduled for October 15, will be held after a 35-year break.

Chittagong University, established in 1966, held CUCSU elections only six times: in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1981 and 1990.
