The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the Islami Andolan Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis on Friday held separate rallies in Dhaka to press home their five-point demand, including a legal basis for the July Charter, holding the next general election following the proportional representation system.
Jamaat held its rally in front of the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Islami Andolan at Shurawardy Udyan, and Khilafat Majlis held their rally in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque as part of the simultaneous movement of the Islamic parties.
Addressing Jamaat’s rally, its secretary general Mia Golam Parwar demanded a referendum before the next general election to implement the July Charter and urged that a proposal on adopting the proportional representation system in parliamentary elections be included in that referendum.
Jamaat organised the rally to press home their five-point demand, including giving legal status to the July Charter and holding the next general election following the PR system.
Parwar said that the PR system should not be avoided without taking the consent of the people.
‘If the people give their opinion in favour of the PR system, all political parties will have to accept it.  And, if the people reject the system, we will accept it,’ he said.
He urged the government to ban the politics of partners of the Awami League-led alliance and alleged that the partners had guarded and favoured the Awami League to remain in power unlawfully and hold fake elections.
The Jamaat leader said that they wanted to see visible developments in trials of the fascists before the next general election.
He also called on the interim government to ensure a level playing field for all political parties before the next general election in February next year.
The next general election must be held in a free, fair and credible manner so that the voters can cast their votes in favour of their desired candidates, he said.Â
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded Purana Paltan crossing, Bijoynagar and Karail crossing before ending at Shantinagar.
Besides holding a rally at Shurawardy Udyan in Dhaka, Islami Andolan held rallies in major cities to press home their five demands.
IBA leaders at the Suhrawardy Udyan rally said that numerous political organisations had been persistently continuing their street movements, but the government had shown no initiative in addressing their demands.
The Dhaka rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads led by IAB chief Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim.
Rezaul Karim demanded a legal basis for the July Charter before the next general election and holding the next general election following the PR system.
Addressing the Khelfat Majlish’s rally in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital, the party’s amir Mamunul Haque urged the government to fulfill their five demands, including holding the next general election following the PR system and legal recognition of the July Charter before the national election.
The rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads.
