A Union Parishad member was beaten to death by rivals in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh Sunday night.
The deceased is Jamal Uddin, 50, son of Shohor Ali of Nalchapra village in the upazila and a member of no-8 ward of Banihala Union Parishad.
Quoting local people, police said that Jamal had a longstanding enmity with Jashim Uddin.
As a sequel to the enmity, a group of miscreants swooped on Jamal at around 8:00pm in front of Darus Sunnah Qawmi Madrassah when he was returning home and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him injured.
Later, he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead at around 9:00pm.
Additional superintendent of Mymensingh police Abdullah Al Mamun said that they detained two people鈥擪asim Uddin, 55 and Anwar Hossain, 45鈥攆or their suspected involvement in the killing.
