Politicians on Monday at a discussion meeting in Dhaka city said that the demand for using the proportional representation system in the next general election and holding referendum before the election could hamper the polls in the scheduled time.

They called on the leaders of political parties to take steps so that the next general elections could be held in the first half of next February.


Nagarik Juba Oikya, youth front of Nagarik Oikya, organised the discussion on ‘Holding the next general elections and its challenges’ at the National Press Club with its chief coordinator Mahfuzul Islam Khan in chair.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that some political parties were demanding the next general election in the proportional representation system and a referendum before the election.

Such demands could hamper the holding of the next general election next February, Salahuddin said.

He called on the political parties to reach a consensus to hold the next national polls in February.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that most of the political parties wanted next general election in February.

Political parties should stand firm on holding the elections in February although attempts might there be from some quarters to delay it, Manna said.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the country was likely to plunge into a serious political crisis if general elections were delayed.

Amar Bangladesh Party chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju said that Islamist political parties were trying to forge unity before the election to secure more votes among Muslims.

He hoped that next general elections would be competitive if it was held in free, fair and credible manner.

Gono Odhikar Parishad general secretary Mohammad Rashed Khan hoped that political parties would remain united for holding next general election in credible manner with an aim to implement the spirit of July uprising.
