Social welfare and women and children affairs adviser Sharmeen S Murshid at a programme in Dhaka on Monday said that they were working hard for the welfare and protection of children’s rights.
She made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of World Children’s Day 2025 and Child Rights Week at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, said a press release.
Presided over by senior secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Momtaz Ahmed, the event was attended by special guests, including of fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter and UNICEF representative Rana Flowers.
Bangladesh Shishu Academy director general Dilara Begum delivered welcome speech while child speakers Roop Sanchari Charcha and Md Samiul Islam also spoke at the programme.
Mentioning that the UNICEF started the first World Children’s Day with the aim of raising global awareness for the welfare and protection of children’s rights, Sharmeen Murshid said that the reality was that these were still lagging behind in many aspects.
‘Although the constitution and various laws of Bangladesh ensure them, we are working hard to resolve it,’ she mentioned.
She also pointed out that the government had adopted and implemented various development-oriented programmes for all the children.
‘It has decided to establish a separate special children’s court for the child-based justice system. This has made the law and justice system rehabilitation-oriented for children, giving a progressive message from the perspective of punishment,’ she mentioned.
The adviser also urged all to let children grow up safely, get opportunities and their dreams come true.
At the event, families of 62 children martyred in the July uprising were given honour and grants.
