The police in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, arrested four members, including a woman, of a kidnapping gang and rescued a victim who was allegedly lured into a honey trap.

The police also seized a four-wheeler used in the abduction, said the police in a press release on Saturday.

The arrests were made on Friday afternoon during a raid in the Jamsing area, following a 20-hour operation based on phone tracking and intelligence, said Mohammad Shahinur Kabir, additional superintendent of police in Savar Circle.

The detainees were identified as Shariful, 25, and Zainal, 25, both from Pirgacha in Rangpur; Sokal Anmona, 19, from Ishwarganj in Mymensingh; and Kawser Hossain Konok, 20, from Nakla in Sherpur.

According to the police, the gang had trapped a family planning inspector from Chitalmari in Bagerhat through mobile phone communication.

The suspects, allegedly by setting up a love trap, lured him to Savar upazila and abducted him from near the mini zoo in the upazila on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, and later demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom from his family.

Responding to an emergency call to the national helpline 999, the Savar Model Police launched a rescue mission and managed to free Hasan from a hidden location in Jamsing.

‘The gang had been renting houses in Genda and Radio Colony areas of Savar, targeting victims through honey traps to extort ransom,’ Shahinur Kabir said.

‘A vehicle used in the abduction has been seized, and a regular case has been filed against the suspects. They will be sent to court,’ he added.
