The newly opened Priyo Bangla Art Gallery began its journey with a group art exhibition in Banglamotor, Dhaka, recently.
The gallery’s executive director, Mehrin Hossain, founder of the Mati fashion house, and its convener, artist Kazi Kibria, spearheaded the initiative.
The exhibition, which began on September 20, is a two-week tribute to the late artist-sculptor Hamiduzzaman Khan.
It is featuring 45 artworks from 30 artists.
The display comprises paintings and sculptures by renowned artists such as Abdus Sattar, Hamiduzzaman Khan, Abdul Mannan, Ivy Zaman, Wahid Zaman, Azharul Islam Chanchal, Tarun Ghosh, Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Samar Majumder, among others.
Notable pieces include Abdus Sattar’s Nature, a woodcut print, which explores the textures and forms of red water lilies; Abdul Mannan’s Nature, an acrylic on canvas, which captures a serene landscape of a water body surrounded by greenery; Samar Majumder’s Friends, an acrylic on canvas, depicts two Bengali women gossiping under a tree; Mohiuddin Ahmed’s The Elephant, a pen and ink drawing, showcases folk decorative forms of an elephant.
Kazi Kibria said that the gallery aims to support and promote emerging Bangladeshi artists.
‘Our goal is to organise solo exhibitions for young artists, providing them with a space to present their work in an intimate setting,’ he said.
He also mentioned plans to expand the gallery in the future to include art camps, workshops, and even an art library.
This exhibition is the result of a two-day workshop held in Gazipur in February, where many of the featured artists developed their work.
The exhibition will conclude today.
