The filing of false cases continued over incidents during the July uprising, creating doubt and concern among the victims about getting justice in the cases.
The cases are being filed over murders of and attacks on protesters during the 2024 uprising that toppled the Awami League regime.
A section of people are allegedly filing false cases, accusing a huge number of people, aiming to realise money from the accused.
Besides, allegations also found that some people were filing false cases to make the trial of the cases controversial.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Jahangirnagar University correspondent reported that a man identifying himself as a ‘conscious citizen’ filed a second case over the killing of a teenager during the July uprising, leading the victim’s family to allege the move is intended to obstruct justice.
Rafiqul Islam, 56, lodged the complaint with the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, naming former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, and 250 others as accused.
His petition stated that a ‘Saad Mahmud Khan, 26,’ was shot outside the Ashulia police station on July 19, 2024, who died six days later at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The petition contradicts an earlier case filed by the youngman’s father, Bahadur Khan, who reported that his 12-year-old son, Sayad Mahmud Khan, a sixth-grade madrassah student, was shot on July 20 in Savar and died the same day.
That case, lodged in September 2024 at the Savar Model police station, remains under investigation.
According to the complaint, Sayad received a bullet injury below the waist on July 20 at Chapain Road, beside Savar New Market, and succumbed to his wounds later that day in a private hospital in Savar.
‘There was no one else by my son’s name in Singair who died in July or August,’ said plaintiff Bahadur Khan.
Ashulia police officer-in-charge Abdul Hannan confirmed that the court had asked whether a case had previously been filed in Ashulia over the death.
‘We checked our records and found none in Ashulia, but we have reported that the Savar police are already investigating the killing of a boy with the same name,’ he said.
Savar model police station officer-in-charge Jewel Mia confirmed that the station had received the case concerning the killing of Sayad Mahmud Khan.
Rafiqul Islam, who listed his address as Shahibagh in Savar and gave no indication of any connection to the victim, could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, on September 14, a July uprising injured at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka expressed doubt over getting justice regarding a ‘false case’ filed by a person in Dhaka in his name.
Gazetted injured victim Saifuddin Muhammad Emdad alleged that, claiming to be a human rights activist, a person named MA Hashem Raju filed a ‘false case’ in Dhaka on behalf of him (Emdad) in a move to hatch a conspiracy to make the July fighters questionable.
Noting that he was actually injured in Chattogram and filed a case there in connection with the incident, Emdad said that he served a legal notice on Raju on June 28, 2025, to withdraw the case, but Raju had not responded to it yet.
According to the case statement, plaintiff Raju on behalf of Emdad on March 20 filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court against 201 named individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed, and Obaidul Quader, and 205-300 unidentified individuals over carrying out an attack on Emdad on August 4, 2024, in front of the InterContinental Hotel in the capital.
In Chattogram, Emdad on June 17 filed a case with the Khulshi police station against 167 named individuals, mainly AL leaders and activists and also some businesspeople, over carrying out an attack on him on August 5, 2024, in the port city’s Khulshi area, showed Emdad’s case documents.
Home adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury while talking to journalists past week in Naraynganj said, ’We are working to ensure that no innocent individual is harassed in false cases filed over the July uprising.’
