Warnings for heavy rainfall in most parts of the country and flash flood in Chattogram division were issued on Thursday for the next two days after a depression intensified into a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

Passenger services on 11 coastal routes connecting Bhola, Barguna and Patuakhali districts were suspended on Thursday due to the deep depression and adverse weather, causing immense sufferings of people.


A landslide warning for the hill districts was also issued with warning for temporary water stagnation at places over Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.

Since Thursday morning, light rain had been seen throughout the day at some parts of the capital Dhaka.

The Dhaka city recorded 206 millimetres of rainfall between 6:00am Tuesday and 6:00am Wednesday, the highest in this year for the city.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Khepupara in Barishal district recorded the highest rainfall, 95 millimetres, in the country between 6:00am Wednesday and 6:00am Thursday.

The met office on Thursday issued a series of special weather bulletins.

According to a special weather bulletin, the deep depression over westcentral Bay and adjoining area moved northwestwards, and laid over northwest Bay and adjoining westcentral Bay Thursday noon.

It was about 835 kilometres southwest of the Chattogram port, 810km southwest of the Cox’s Bazar port, 665km southwest of the Mongla port and 685km southwest of the Payra port.

It is likely to move north – northwestwards direction and may cross Odisha and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coasts of India between Gopalpur and Paradip about 9:00pm on Thursday.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no 3.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.

The met office’s meteorologist, Shahnaz Sultana, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that under the influence of the deep depression, heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur at places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions during the 48 hours commencing at 3:00pm of Thursday.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that incessant rainfall from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon inundated roads in Barishal city.

Bhola district river port officer Shahidul Alam said that operations of all passenger carrier river transports, including speedboats, had been suspended on 11 routes along Bhola since Thursday morning.

These services were also closed in the coastal areas of Barguna and Patuakhali.

In this situation, a very few number of devotees came to visit the puja mandaps in Barishal city on the last day of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindus in the country.

The daily rainfall, river situation and forecast report issued by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre at 9:00am on Thursday said that the water levels of the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers in Chattogram division increased during the past 24 hours.

These rivers may continue to swell in the next two days till 9:00am Saturday.

In this period, the Muhuri, Selonia and Feni rivers may flow above their danger levels in Feni district, causing short-term flooding in adjacent low-lying areas, while the Feni River may flow at the warning level in Chattogram district, temporarily inundating low-lying areas.

The forecast also mentioned that during the next three days the Teesta River in Rangpur division might flow at the warning level, temporarily inundating low-lying areas in Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts.

During the next three days, the Someshwari and Bhugai–Kangsha rivers in Mymensingh division may flow at their warning levels in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrakona districts, temporarily inundating adjacent low-lying areas.

Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram divisions are experiencing higher-than-normal tides, which may continue for the next two days, the forecast added.

As per a warning valid from 4:00pm on Thursday to 1:00am on Friday, inland river ports in the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna, Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet have been advised to keep hoisted cautionary signal no 1.

United News of Bangladesh reported that some low-lying areas in the port city of Chattogram were submerged due to heavy overnight rainfall, causing immense suffering of residents and commuters on Thursday.
