The police have arrested the in-charge of the Salimganj police camp under Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria, allegedly for torturing a youth to death at the camp.
The camp in-charge, sub-inspector Md Mohim Uddin, was arrested at his workplace on Monday in the case of killing a 27-year-old youth, Md Abdullah, of Baherchar village under Bancharampur upazila of the district, said Nabinagar police station officer-in-charge Md Shahinur Islam.
He was produced before a court in Brahmanbaria on the same day and the court sent him to jail, he said.
He said that efforts were underway to arrest the other accused.
The victim鈥檚 cousin Shakil Mia filed the case against four identified people, including SI Mohim, Ainal Haque, 30, of Baherchar village, and Tobi Mia, 34, and Al-Amin, both of Barail village under the upazila, and 20 to 25 unidentified others.
According to the family, a theft incident occurred at Tobi鈥檚 house in Salimganj on September 17, and Tobi鈥檚 relatives later lodged a complaint with Nabinagar police station.
On September 23, Tobi and his relatives detained Abdullah near the auto-rickshaw stand in Salimganj Bazar, accused him of theft, and tortured him on the road before handing him over to SI Mohim at the camp, they said.
Shakil alleged that the police, led by Mohim, also tortured Abdullah at the Salimganj police camp.聽
As Abdullah鈥檚 condition deteriorated, police first took him to a private hospital and later shifted him to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where he died on September 28.
