Home adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday said that a certain quarter, instigated by India or fascist forces, was trying to create an unstable situation in Khagrachhari.

‘We are making our maximum efforts so that no one can create further unrest in Khagrachhari,’ he said.

The home adviser came up with the remarks while inaugurating the construction of administrative-cum-barrack buildings for five police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Old Ramna Thana Complex in the capital.

Jahangir said that the Chattogram Hill Tracts affairs adviser Supradip Chakma had already held meetings with local leaders and law enforcement agencies, and the situation in Khagrachhari was now under control.

He said that some miscreants were firing from the hilltops and that these weapons often come from outside the country.

Replying to a query, he said that most of the tourists, stranded in Khagrachhari, had already been brought back.

The adviser further said that the aides of the fallen fascist regime were attempting to trigger chaos across the country to disrupt the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations that began on Sunday.

He urged all to extend cooperation in restoring normalcy in Khagrachhari and ensuring the peaceful celebration of the festival.

At least three people from a national minority community were killed and dozens, including security personnel, were injured as violence erupted in Khagrachari district on Sunday during a road blockade in Khagrachari protesting against the rape of a 12-year-old Marma girl.

Since Saturday, a blockade has been underway in the hill district of Khagrachari under the banner of ‘Jumma-Chhatra Janata’.

As the situation deteriorated, the administration on Saturday afternoon imposed Section 144 in the Khagrachhari municipality and Sadar upazila areas.
