Visual artist Sunil Kumar depicts spirit of Sharadiya Durga Puja and experiences of Bengali women in his fourth solo exhibition, Immersion in the World Path, under way at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Gulshan, Dhaka.
The two-week exhibition, jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Indian High Commission, Dhaka opened on September 18.
Through his works, Sunil Kumar explores the many roles of women—as mothers, daughters and lovers—alongside their emotions, joys and sorrows.
The exhibition also includes a number of experimental abstract pieces.
Many of his artworks voice protest against discrimination and oppression in the contemporary world while calling for human bonding.
The exhibition features 54 artworks created in diverse mediums, including acrylic, charcoal, watercolour, brush pen and pastel on both paper and canvas.
An oil on canvas painting titled ‘Goddess Durga’, depicts the battle between Durga and the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
A mixed-media painting, Waiting for You, portrays a Bengali woman preparing to welcome guests during Sharadiya Durga Puja.
Another oil work on handmade paper, Waiting for Someone Special, depicts a pregnant woman standing under the moon with a lotus on her womb, symbolising the bond between mother and child.
A charcoal piece titled ‘Nazrul Anecdote’ shows a bust of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, with men, women and birds engaging in symbolic discussions.
‘I try to depict real-life stories on my canvas, while nature remains the great deity of my creation. Machines dominate much of our modern lifestyle. Though they help us, they have also caused incidents that pose major obstacles in our path of life,’ said Sunil Kumar.
The exhibition will end on Wednesday.
