The leaders of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged taxpayers and businesses to utilise the e-return system for filing income tax returns to overcome the existing obstacles in the tax return filing process.

They revealed it at the inaugural ceremony of a workshop titled ‹Personal Income Tax and E-return› organised by the DCCI on Saturday.

At the ceremony, DCCI president Taskeen Ahmed stated that submitting income tax is the moral responsibility of every citizen and businessman, as the government implements domestic infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and various social safety net programmes through tax revenues.

‘In order to strengthen the country›s economic foundation, the role of income tax and VAT is crucial,’ he said, adding that Bangladesh›s contribution of income tax to GDP is relatively very low comparing with other countries.

To overcome this situation, the country needs to increase its tax-to-GDP ratio, he said, according to a press release.

‘The government has been encouraging the citizens to pay their taxes and has introduced the e-return system to eliminate existing obstacles in the tax payment process,’ he added.

He also said that this initiative would help ensure greater transparency and accountability in overall revenue administration.

He stressed that both individual taxpayers and businesses should use the e-return filing system to pay their taxes.

The workshop featured three technical sessions on income tax, value-added tax, and e-return.

The sessions were conducted by prominent chartered accountants, including Lutful Hadee, proprietor and CEO of Hadee Lutful and Co, Md Shafiqul Alam, director of Bizz Solutions Ltd, and Snehasish Barua, partner of Snehasish Mahmud and Co.

They shared in-depth insights on their respective topics.

DCCI senior vice president Razeev H Chowdhury and vice president Md Salem Sulaiman was also present at the ceremony.

More than 70 participants from DCCI member firms attended the workshop, gaining comprehensive knowledge of income tax, VAT, and e-return, which will facilitate them in running their business operations smoothly.
