The administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 indefinitely in Khagrachhari Municipality and the surrounding areas of the Sadar upazila following unrest over anti-rape protests in the district.

The Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure would remain in effect indefinitely to maintain law and order, restricting public gatherings and rallies, read a notice signed by district commissioner ABM Iftikharul Islam Khandakar.


The directive stated that legal action would be taken against those who violate the order that took effect from 2:00pm on Saturday, until further notice.

A dawn-to-dusk blockade was being observed on the day called by minority student platform Jumma Chhatra Janata, demanding the arrest of all individuals involved in the rape of a Marma schoolgirl in Khagrachari鈥檚 Singinala on September 23.

Due to the blockade, all road communication with Khagrachari remained closed.

The protesters blocked the roads since early morning by burning tires and throwing tree trunks.

Protesters alleged that bricks and stones were thrown at them and were attacked on the side of the road in Sadar Upazila premises during the blockade.
