
National University has made the information and communication technology course compulsory for the undergraduate students freshly admitted under the 2024–25 session for honours degree programmes.Â
The order will apply to all the first year students enrolled in the honours programmes under all the departments of the university.
For teaching the students, educational institutions under National University have been instructed to engage teachers from the science departments or procure part-time teachers with specific qualification from elsewhere.Â
Currently, National University has 2,257 tertiary-level government, non-government and other types of colleges and educational institutions under it.
Over 34 lakh students are studying in these institutions registered with the university, as per the university’s website.
A notice, issued by the university authorities on Friday but published on its website on Saturday, read that a theoretical and practical course on ICT subject had been made mandatory for all first year (honours) students of the 2024–2025 sessions.
Associate professor AHM Ruhul Quddus, dean (in-charge) of the university’s Curriculum Development and Evaluation Centre, who signed the notice, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the notice would be applicable to all first year students from now on.Â
The notice also read that the teachers of ICT or computer sciences or computer science and engineering and relevant subjects would get priority in teaching the ICT course.
Also, individuals trained by the Bangladesh Computer Council, or who received Training of Trainers, or trained by College Education Development Project, or National Skills Development Authority, or Bangladesh Technical Education Board, and have post graduate diploma from any recognised university by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh would be eligible for teaching this subject.
The notice further said that if there were no teachers from the aforementioned subject, teachers from the physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, zoology, biology, biochemistry, soil sciences, geography and environment, and environmental science subjects would also be eligible for teaching the ICT course.Â
Provided there were no teachers available from any of these subjects, the authorities of the educational institutions could appoint district or upazila level on-duty commuter or assistant programmers, or ICT expert resource persons as part-time teachers for the course, the notice added.
