The charter for the Islamic University Central Students’ Union elections is expected to be finalised by October 15, said head of the constitution drafting committee Professor Mizanur Rahman on Friday.

Students, however, raised concerns over delays in the committee’s work, citing uncertainty about the formation of the students’ union.

They also repeatedly staged human chains and submitted memorandums to the administration, demanding swift action.

IU Chhatra Shibir has called for a clear announcement of the election date by September 22, while the IU Reform Movement has urged the administration to expedite the drafting process. Both groups warned of intensified protests if the deadline is missed.

The 11-member drafting committee, formed on August 24 following demands from the Movement for IUCSU, has faced criticism for slow progress, despite its 20-day initial tenure.

Professor Mizanur Rahman said that the committee was reviewing constitutions from six other universities to guide IU’s charter.

A draft was expected before the Durga Puja break, September 30, with the final version submitted by October 15, he said.

He also emphasised that the process could not be rushed as it required careful legal and administrative review.

‘Any necessary amendments under national law for the student union would fall under the authority of the university and the government, potentially requiring a presidential ordinance in the absence of the national parliament,’ he said.

Student leaders have stressed that a clear election schedule and visible steps toward implementation by September 22 are crucial to prevent further unrest among students.
