The Bangladesh Cricket Board is set to appoint a woman selector for the national women’s team, stated board president Aminul Islam Bulbul on Friday.
Currently the national selection panel for the men’s team comprises former captain Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the chairman and Abdur Razzak as the member.
Hannan Sarkar stepped down from the selector’s role in February to pursue his coaching career. Sazzad Ahmed, meanwhile, is working as the selector for the women’s wing.
‘We have already decided that two selectors will join, one for the men’s team and another for the women’s,’ Aminul told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
‘A senior figure in cricket will join Lipu [Gazi Ashraf] bhai and Razzak, and for the women’s team, we are thinking of appointing a woman selector,’ he added.
A BCB official later said that they decided to appoint a former female cricketer to the selection panel, which would be a historic move.
Aminul spoke following the conclusion of the BCB Level-Three coaching course, stating that the initiative aimed to bridge a long-standing gap in the country’s coaching pathway.
‘There have never been any Level-3 coaching classes here, but many Level-2 coaches have been waiting to find out how they can move to the next step,’ said Aminul.
‘So we identified those coaches at first through the help of cricket operations and game development. So we found coaches who were working with BCB, and then those who are working in other countries also arrived,’ he added.
BCB’s coordinator of game development, Habibul Bashar, echoed the importance of investing in coaches to improve Bangladesh’s cricketing future.
‘We had a plan to educate our resources. We started with our district coaches, and now this program is for our elite coaches – Level Three. What we all realised is that if we want to improve as a cricketing nation, we have to improve our coaches,’ he said.
BCB directors Nazmul Abedeen Fahim and Iftikhar Rahman Mithu were also present at the closing ceremony of the workshop, which was conducted by Ross Turner, Alan Campbell, Geoff Lawson, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Natasha Campbell.
