Rajshahi University on Thursday introduced digital transactions for students, teachers and staff under the Bangladesh Bank’s cashless Bangladesh initiative.
In a press release, the RU said that the university became the country’s ‘first cashless campus’ with the introduction of the central bank’s initiative.
The initiative, jointly implemented by Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC and Mastercard, was inaugurated at a ceremony at the university’s Senate Building by RU pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Professor Mohammad Main Uddin, who attended the event as chief guest.
Speaking at the programme, the pro-VC said, ‘Rajshahi University, being the country’s second-largest campus, has set a milestone by becoming the first fully cashless campus.’
The step reflected Bangladesh’s ongoing digital transformation goals, will expand financial inclusion and ensure seamless payments for teachers and students, he said.
Apart from contributing to the broader economy, the initiative will also reduce the hidden costs of cash-based transactions, he said, adding that the launch of exclusive student debit cards would make digital payments easier.
Among others, Islami Bank Bangladesh managing director Md Omar Faruk Khan, Bangladesh Bank Rajshahi office director (administration) Rathin Kumar Pal, BB payment systems department director Md Sharafatullah and Mastercard Bangladesh country manager Syed Md Kamal also spoke on the occasion.
The event was presided over by Rafeza Akter Kanta, director of the Bangladesh Bank’s payment systems department.
