Several student organisations and alliances on Thursday announced their panels for the upcoming elections to the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union and hall unions, scheduled for October 12.

The organisations and alliances include Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir, Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh, and an alliance of 11 left student organisations. 


Student leaders in the July uprising and cultural activists also announced an independent panel.

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal announced its panel at a press conference at the university’s Buddhijibi Chattar.

CU JCD unit organising secretary Sajjad Hossain Hridoy has been nominated to vie for the post of vice-president, Md Shafayat Hossain for general secretary and Ayubur Rahman Tawfiq for assistant general secretary.

Chhatra Dal central general secretary Nasir Uddin, addressing the press conference, alleged that the university administration was politicised and biased towards a particular group.

Islami Chhatra Shibir announced its panel ‘Shampritir Shikkharthi Jote’ in the Jarultala area on the campus. The panel nominated Ibrahim Hossain Roni for the post of vice-president, Sayed Bin Habib for general secretary and Sajjad Hossain Munna for assistant general secretary.

An independent panel, formed with the student leaders in the July uprising and cultural activists, announced its nominations at a press conference at the CUCSU Building.

Mahfuzur Rahman was nominated for the post of vice-president, RM Rashidul Haque Dinar for general secretary and Jannatul Ferdous was nominated for the post of assistant general secretary in the panel.

An alliance of 11 left student organisations under the banner of ‘Boichittrer Oikko’ also announced a panel at around noon.

The panel nominated Dhrubo Barua of Ganatantrik Chhatra Council for the post of vice-president, Sudarshan Chakma of Pahari Chhatra Parishad for general secretary and Jakirul Islam Jasim of Biplobi Chhatra Moitri for the post of assistant general secretary.

Islami Chhatra Andolon Bangladesh also announced its panel in the afternoon. It nominated Abdur Rahman

Robin for the post of vice-president, Mohammad Abdur Rahman for general secretary and Aminul Islam Rakib for the assistant general secretary position.

The CUCSU election is scheduled for October 12. A total of 27,634 students are expected to exercise their voting rights.

According to the CUCSU election commission, a total of 1,162 nomination forms have been collected, including 528 for CUCSU posts and 634 for different posts in hall unions.

The preliminary list of candidates will be published on September 21. The deadline for withdrawal has been fixed for September 23.

The final list of candidates will be announced on September 25.

Chittagong University, established in 1966, has held CUCSU elections only six times.

The elections were held in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1981, and in 1990 for the last time.
