The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved a project of the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology at its meeting at the NEC conference room at the planning commission in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The project titled capacity enhancement of DUET laboratories and necessary infrastructure development along with modernisation will be implemented for a period of four years from July 2025 to June 2029, said a press release.

DUET vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Zoynal Abedin at a reception at the DUET said that this project was a ground breaking step to develop DUET’s research activities to be world-class and innovation-oriented.

‘By modernising DUET’s laboratories, our students will get the opportunity for international-standard research. At the same time, DUET will be able to play a stronger role in producing skilled engineers,’ he said.

Mentioning that DUET is playing an important role in the sustainable development, innovation and industrialisation of the country, the VC said, ‘It is essential to develop the capacity of DUET through laboratory and infrastructure development to keep pace with the rapid changes in technology.’

The main goal of this project is to modernise the laboratory for about 3,500 students, construct academic and laboratory buildings, provide housing facilities for 1600 new students, and improve security and inter-campus communication, he mentioned.

DUET Pro–VC Professor Md Arefin Kawsar said, ‘With the successful implementation of this project, DUET will become an ideal research incubator by being enriched with modern scientific equipment and facilities.’

The project will be implemented with government funding at the initiative of the secondary and higher education department and jointly implemented by the Bangladesh University Grants Commission and the DUET.
