
At least six people, including a female student of Khulna University, were killed and scores injured in five road accidents in four districts, namely Bandarban, Habiganj, Noakhali and Gopalganj districts on Wednesday, according to 抖阴精品 correspondents and news agencies.
抖阴精品 correspondent in Khulna reported that the road accident happened in Sajek of Rangamati hill district in the afternoon in which 12 of her fellow students were also injured.
The deceased was identified as Rubina Afsana Rinki, a physics student at the university, and the daughter of Abdur Rahman from Palashbari upazila under Gaibandha district.
According to the university鈥檚 public relations office, 38 students, four teachers and two office staffers of the physics department were travelling Bandarban since September 15.
On the day, they went to Sajek, a popular tourist destination in Baghaichari upazila, and the accident happened when a jeep carrying them plunged into a roadside ditch.
Sajek zone in-charge of Tourist Police sub-inspector Premananda Mandal said that the jeep carrying 12 students and a teacher of Khulna University plunged into the roadside ditch at Housipara locality as its driver lost control over steering while coming down from the hill around 2:00pm, leaving Rubina dead and 12 others injured.
On information, police and army personnel rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The injured were initially taken to Dighinala Upazila Health Complex where the condition of three other students was stated critical.
The university鈥檚 student affairs director Nazmus Sadat said that the some teachers of the physics discipline, authorised by the university, were closely monitoring the treatment of the injured.
In Habiganj, three people, including a woman and her minor boy, were killed on Wednesday in two separate accidents on Dhaka-Sylhet highway, reported 抖阴精品 staff correspondent in Sylhet.
The deceased were identified as Shamima Akhter, 35, wife of Syed Ali of Sagardighi Pashchimpar village at Baniachang upazila in Habiganj, her minor son Toki Ahmed, and a covered van driver Mohammed Furkan, 40, of Bagerhat district, the police said.
In one of the two accidents, Sherpur highway police officer-in-charge Abu Taher Dewan said that a Sylhet-bound speeding bus of Saudia Paribahan ran over Shamima Akhter and her little son on the highway in Dewpara area of Nabiganj upazila about Wednesday noon, killing them on the spot.
He said that the bodies were handed over to their relatives in the afternoon without post-mortem examination following local administration鈥檚 order.
The bus was seized from the spot but its driver and his assistant fled, he said.
In the other incident, a Shyamali Paribahan bus collided head-on with a covered van on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Hafizpur area in Habiganj鈥檚 Bahubal upazila, leaving covered van driver Mohammed Furkan critically injured.
Shaistaganj Highway Police officer-in-charge Sanjay Chakrabarti said that the injured driver was taken to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital where Furkan was declared dead.
His body was kept in the hospital鈥檚 mortuary, he said, adding that the two vehicles involved in the accident were seized.
In Noakhali, a bus driver was killed and 20 others were injured when an Ekushey Paribahan bus collided head-on with a truck on the Noakhali-Dhaka road in Sonaimuri upazila on Wednesday, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.
The deceased was identified as Belayet Hossain, 46, son of Golam Sharowar of Kalikapur village in Chatkhil upazila of the district.
Chandraganj Highway Police officer-in-charge Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan said that the accident happened when the bus hit a sand-laden standing truck from behind as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving 21 passengers, including its driver injured.
The injured were taken to Sonaimuri Upazila Health Complex where the doctor on duty declared Belayet dead.
In Gopalganj, a 17-year-old boy, who was an assistant (helper) of a covered-van driver, was killed when his vehicle collided with another vehicle in Pona area under Kashiani upazila on the day, BSS reported.
The deceased, Simanto, son of Mofizur Rajman Montu, was a resident of Putkhali under Benapole in Jashore district.
The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Khulna highway, said Roman, a sub-inspector of Vatiapara Highway Police.
Critically injured Simanto was declared dead when taken to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex, SI Roman said.
