The inspector general of police, Baharul Alam, on Wednesday said that police had taken security measures to ensure celebration of the forthcoming Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindus in Bangladesh, in a peaceful atmosphere.
He made the statement while presiding over a meeting on the overall law and order situation ahead of Durga Puja. The meeting was held at the police headquarters in the capital Dhaka.
‘Police will maintain three-tier security measures before, during and after the celebration of Durga Puja. Police will remain vigilant for the security of Puja mandaps across the country,’ he said during the programme.
He also sought cooperation from all to ensure smooth celebration of Durga Puja to be celebrated at 31,566 mandaps, special gathering places for the devotees, across the country from September 21 to October 2.
Puja organisers have been asked to contact the national emergency service helpline 999 or the nearest police station if any suspicious activity is noticed, the IGP said.
Baharul also urged Puja Udjapan Parishad leaders to ensure CCTV surveillance and deploy volunteers for round-the-clock security at each mandap.
Additional law enforcers, including police in plain clothes, along with Special Weapons and Tactics teams, Crime Response Teams and Bomb Disposal Units would remain standby during the festival to avoid any untoward incidents, said Baharul.
Besides, monitoring cells would also be set up at the police headquarters and all relevant police units during the Puja celebration.
