NRB Bank PLC, as lead bank, organised a two-day seminar, campaign, and roadshow titled ‘Cashless Bangladesh’ at different venues in Cumilla, including Cumilla University and Victoria College.

Officials from 45 banks of the Cumilla region actively participated in the programme, said a press release.


Bangladesh Bank’s Payment Systems Department director Rafeza Akhter Kanta presided over the event.

BB executive director Arief Hossain Khan inaugurated the programme recently.

NRB Bank managing director (current charge) Anwar Uddin attended the event as a special guest.

This initiative was undertaken to raise public awareness regargding benefits of cashless digital transactions, especially through QR code payments.

At the event, speakers highlighted the Bangladesh Bank governor’s observation that the cost of handling cash in Bangladesh exceeded Tk 20,000 crore annually, which could be significantly reduced by adopting cashless digital transactions.

A target has been set to minimise cash usage and transition towards a zero-cash economy within the next ten years.

They further emphasised that a cashless economy would strengthen financial discipline, reduce counterfeit currency activities and enhance overall efficiency in economic management.

Among others, NRB Bank deputy managing director Md Shaheen Howlader, Tanzina Jahan, assistant commissioner (land), Adarsha Sadar, Cumilla; and Parvez Anjum Monir, additional director of the BB’s Payment Systems Department, were present.
