The vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Md Shahinul Alam, reaffirmed the institution’s core mission to produce healthcare professionals who prioritise compassion and human values alongside scientific excellence.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Human Values and Etiquette in University Health Care Practice,’ held on BMU campus in Dhaka on Monday, said a press release.


‘It is not enough to be skilled only; a doctor must have compassion for the patient,’ he said, outlining the university’s commitment to providing patient-centric healthcare built on the pillars of science, ethics, and human values.

The seminar, organised by the University Central Seminar Sub-Committee, brought together faculty and students to discuss the critical role of bedside manner and professional conduct in medicine.

The event featured speeches from Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman, a scientist from ICDDR,B, and Professor Mohammad Nasimul Islam, a forensic pathologist from UCSI.

BMU’s pro-vice-chancellors Professor Md Abul Kalam Azad (administration), Professor Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader (research and development), treasurer Professor Nahreen Akhtar, were also present.

Chaired by Professor Afzalun Nesa, the seminar concluded with an interactive session where doctors and resident students engaged in a live question-and-answer session.
