Bangladesh joined the global community on Tuesday in observing World Ozone Day with a series of events, including a rally, a discussion meeting, and an award ceremony, all centred on this year’s theme: ‘From science to global action’.

Organised by the ministry of environment, forest and climate change and the department of environment, the day’s activities aimed to galvanise public commitment to environmental protection, said a press release.

The observance began with a vibrant rally at 8:00am. Led by Md Kamruzzaman, director general of the department of environment, the procession started at the Khamar Bari roundabout on Manik Mia Avenue and concluded at the Aarong end. The event saw participation from around 600 people, including government officials, employees, scouts, and girl guides.

A formal discussion meeting and award ceremony followed at 9:45am. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, environment adviser, attended as the chief guest. The special guest was Mohammad Navid Shafiullah, additional secretary of the ministry.

A key highlight was the prize distribution for a children and adolescents’ painting competition, held on September 12 to raise awareness among the younger generation. The event, presided over by Kamruzzaman, was attended by around 300 participants, including government and private sector representatives.

The day commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1987, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer.
