Miscreants vandalised idols at a temple of Goddess Kali in a neighbourhood at Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Sunday night.

Authorities of the vandalised Shwarupdah Palpara Sri Sri Raksha Kali Temple and the police said that the attackers broke the hands and neck of the Kartik idol and the hands and crown of the Saraswati idol.


The incident came amid preparation of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindus in Bangladesh, to begin in the last week of this month.

Kushtia’s Mirpur police officer-in-charge Mominul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Monday that the attack was suspected to have occured between 8:00pm and 8:30pm on Sunday night.

The vandalism damaged two idols in the temple, he said, adding that the miscreants also stole a security camera and memory card.

Expressing concern over the attack, temple committee member Badal Kumar Dey said, ‘We have been organising Durga Puja here for three years. This incident has thrown us into panic amidst the festive atmosphere.’

Kushtia deputy commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin visited the temple on Monday morning, promising legal action after an investigation.

Besides installing new cameras, Ansar members were deployed in the temple area for security.

No one has been arrested in this connection yet and no complaints were filed, OC Mominul said.

However, the police were conducting an investigation to identify the attackers, he added.
