The investigation into the murder of Islamic University鈥檚 Al-Quran and Islamic Studies department student Sajid Abdullah has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.

An order signed by additional deputy inspector general (crime) Jannatul Hasan confirmed the transfer of the case, filed with the IU police station on August 4.

Officials said that Sajid Abdullah鈥檚 father, Ahsan Habibullah, lodged the case with Islamic University police station and sought a CID probe. CID began the investigation earlier on verbal instructions while the written order was pending.

IU police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said on Saturday that the application for transfer was sent to police headquarters, which later approved the move.

Sajid, a first-year student of the department, resided in Room 109 of Shahid Ziaur Rahman Hall. He was from Ghatail upazila in Tangail. His body was recovered from a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall on July 17 by the university鈥檚 security officers and the police.

Responding to the incident, the university authorities and Shahid Ziaur Rahman Hall administration have formed separate committees to investigate the matter.

The viscera report confirmed that he was strangled to death.
