
Leaders and activists of the Awami League, activities of which are banned, and the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League on Saturday brought out flash processions in Dhaka and Chattogram demanding the resignation of the interim government.
Meanwhile, the police detained nine leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Dhaka while four in Chattogram between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Sher-e Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge Imaul Haque told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that 10 to 15 AL activists took out a procession in front the Bangladesh Betar at Agargaon at about 10:00pm.
‘On information, the police went to the spot and detained two AL activists who took part in the procession while others managed to flee the spot,’ he said.
On Friday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained 12 people in Banglamotor and Gulshan areas for planning and staging flash processions in the city.
Taking legal action against the detainees was under way, added the police official.
The DMP Detective Branch detained seven leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated organsations between 6:00pm on Friday and 1:45am on Saturday for organising and taking part in flash processions in the city, said a DMP press release issued on Saturday.
Four of the seven detainees participated in a flash procession in the capital’s Banglamotor area on September 12.
The DMP in its press release said that the detainees were alleged to have engaged in an attempt to destabilise the country.
Meanwhile, the police detained four banned-BCL leaders and activists for participating in a flash procession at Hamzarbagh in Chattogram city, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Chattogram reported.
Panchlaish police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Sulaiman said that two of the accused were detained at the scene while the other two were detained later during an operation.
‘They were later shown arrested in a case filed under Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, and later sent to jail under a court order on Saturday afternoon,’ he said.
A microbus was seized during the raid, he added.
Earlier, on September 7, leaders and activists of the party and its associate organisations brought out a flash procession at Bijoy Sarani demanding the resignation of the interim government.
On September 5, they staged three processions after the Jumma prayers in Tejgaon’s Nabisco and Dhanmondi areas.
On August 31 evening, some activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out a flash procession in Dhanmondi area and had left the scene before police reached there.
