A Dhaka court on Saturday sent former deputy inspector general AKM Nahidul Islam to jail in a case filed with the International Crimes Tribunal.
The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi passed the order after the Detective Branch of the police produced him before the court and prayed for confining him in jail till the end of the investigation of the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for media and public relations Mohammad Talebur Rahman said that a Detective Branch team arrested Nahidul from his residence in Dhaka’s Eskaton area early Saturday.
The former police officer had already been handed over to the tribunal, DC Talebur said, adding that Nahidul Islam was held following an arrest warrant issued by the ICT issued on August 19.
The arrest came months after the government sent Nahidul into forced retirement on July 28, citing ‘public interest’.
According to court sources, Nahidul is the prime accused in a case filed over the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Tarique Mohammad Saiful Islam, also the elder son of Meherpur district unit Jamaat’s former amir Samir Uddin while Nahidul was serving as superintendent of police in 2014.
AKM Nahidul Islam was previously a DIG at the Special Branch, where he oversaw the political wing.
