
At least eight people, including students and Barishal University Vice chancellor Professor Toufiq Alam, were injured when students of two departments clashed centring a football match on Friday evening.
The clash broke out around 7:00pm on the day near Bhola-Barishal road and later spread in the university’s Gate No 1 area, said witnesses.
Vice-chancellor Toufiq Alam, who rushed to the spot, also received minor injuries as a brick grazed him.Â
He was later taken to his residence where he received first aid, confirmed the university administration.
Witnesses said that tensions sparked around 5:30pm when a group of students from the 12th batch accounting and information systems department locked into an altercation with a senior student of the 10th batch marketing department in the newly built BITAC field over a football game.
At one stage, accounting students allegedly forced the senior student to apologise.Â
Being informed, several marketing department arrived at the spot but they were also assaulted in which three of them were injured.Â
Two of the injured were later taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Later on, marketing students gathered in front of the university’s Gate No 1, while accounting students gathered at the BITAC building, when they chased and hurled bricks at each other.Â
Tensions continued for about an hour until teachers and members of the proctorial body intervened.
‘We saw a message in our group and rushed to the field. We found our batch mate Faisal being beaten,’ said Mostak Ahmed, 10th batch marketing student who received injuries during the time.Â
‘When I tried to intervene, they surrounded me and I had to run to escape,’ he added.
Some accounting and information systems students, however, said that they were willing to sit for a settlement.
Assistant proctor associate professor Dr Rahat Hossain Faisal said, ‘We are trying to resolve the issue through discussions with the students of both departments’.
Several students from both sides were injured, he also said, adding ‘We will sit with them Saturday’.
The campus remained tense till filing of this report on 10:15pm.
