Three BNP-leaning teachers at Jahangirnagar University resigned from monitoring duties in the long-delayed JU Central Students’ Union election on Thursday, alleging widespread irregularities and partisan influence.
Professors Nazrul Islam of the mathematics department, Shamima Sultana of the Bangla department, and Nahreen Islam Khan of the geography and environment department announced their withdrawal in front of the university’s old administrative building on Thursday evening.
‘I was shocked to see new voters being created while we were monitoring,’ Professor Shamima Sultana told reporters.
‘Extra ballot papers have been printed. Why? There must be a purpose behind this,' she added.
Nazrul Islam, provost of Fazilatunnesa Hall, said 15 to 20 other teachers had left the election in frustration.
His claim, however, could not be independently verified.
‘We three came forward to speak to the media,’ Nazrul Islam said.
