Thousands of men and women on Sunday formed a human chain demanding the protection of Char Gorkamandal under Phulbari upazila in Kurigram from severe erosion of the Dharla River.

They demanded that the relevant authorities build a sustainable dam to prevent the erosion.

Organised by the Kurigram District Development and Implementation Committee, the human chain was held on the bank of the Dharla River in the area of Naodanga union of the upazila for about an hour from 5:00pm.

Local people said that at least 50 families had been affected by the erosion in the past one and a half months and river erosion showed no sign of a halt.

Abu Siddique, on behalf of the families affected by the erosion, said, ‘Our cropland, residential areas and even graveyards are being destroyed. Save us from this erosion.’

Kurigram District Development and Implementation Committee president and District BNP senior joint convener Shafiqul Islam Bebu and former health director Shahadat Hossain, among others, spoke at the event.
