Temporary and daily wage workers of Rajshahi City Corporation staged demonstrations on Sunday, demanding the implementation of the government circular regarding fixing their wage.
They formed a human chain and held a demonstration in front of the RCC headquarters Nagar Bhaban to press home their demand.
Speakers at the programmes said that the government had issued a circular a few months ago, setting daily wages at Tk 750 for skilled workers and Tk 700 for unskilled ones, which the city corporation had yet not implemented.
They alleged that the workers were still paid Tk 484 per day and received no wages on Fridays or holidays.
Consequently, most of the workers of these two categories earned merely Tk 10,000–12,000 per month, they alleged.
The protesters also closed the main gate of the city corporation building and demonstrated wielding brooms.
Later, a delegation met RCC chief executive officer Rezaul Karim, who assured them that their wages would be increased within a month.
The workers said that after the government circular, RCC administrator and divisional commissioner Khondoker Azim Ahmed had formed a committee led by the corporation secretary to review the matter.
The committee was supposed to recommend a revised wage structure, but it had not held any meeting in the two months since its formation.
The CEO assured the workers that the committee would sit soon and submit its recommendations, after which their wages would be increased.
