The Financial Institutions Division in a meeting decided to ask the attorney general office, the ministry of home and the ministry of law to extend more cooperation to expedite the recovery of the defaulted loans.

The division which mainly maintains administrative functions of the state-owned banks and non-bank financial institutions will issue letters to the ministries and the attorney general office in this regard, said FID officials.


The decision was taken in meeting presided over by FID secretary Nazma Mobarek at secretariat on Thursday held to review the recovery of process of around 100 defaulted loans cases under 11 state-owned banks and NBFIs.

The amount of defaulted loans with the cases is around Tk聽38,000 crore.

Of the overall amount, 10 cases of defaulted loans of the Janata Bank involved highest Tk聽15,151 crore.

The defaulted amount for Sonali Bank with its top 10 cases is Tk聽5,076 crore, Agrani Bank Tk聽3,980 crore, Sadharan Bima Tk聽3,719 crore, Rupali Bank Tk聽3,748 crore, BASIC Bank Tk聽2,400, BDBL Tk聽876聽 crore, ICB Tk聽860 crore, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Tk聽294 crore and Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission Tk聽84 crore聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

Managing directors of the state-owned banks and NBFIs who attended the meeting described the problems they faced while recovering the defaulted loans.

They alleged that they had not received due responses from police to arrest the defaulters and recovering the properties despite the courts directives, said the officials.

They also said involvement of the deputy commissioners for clearing the huge pending certificate cases was necessary, added the officials.

FID asked the banks and NBFIs to appoint an official for the keep the updates of the defaulted loan.

The division monitored the bad loan recovery efforts of the state-owned banks and NBFIs but failed to check the growth of defaulted loans over the past one and a half decades

After the interim government assuming power with the fall of AwamI League regime on August 5, 2024 in the wake of a mass uprising the FID identified top 100 cases to speed up the recovery.
