The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Thursday imposed a travel ban on Jatiya Party chairman Ghulam Muhammad Quader and his wife, Sharifa Quader, for their alleged involvement in corruption.
Acting judge Md Ibrahim Mia of the court passed the order responding to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission’s deputy director Rezaul Karim, said ACC deputy director for public relations Akhtarul Islam.
According to the petition, an inquiry is going on into the allegations of amassing illegal assets against GM Quader, also a former lawmaker from Rangpur-3 constituency, and others.
Seeking the international travel ban on GM Quader and his wife, the commission stated that the couple was trying to flee the country.
The travel ban comes at a time when Quader is already grappling with internal conflict in the Jatiya Party, where factional feuds and legal challenges have repeatedly threatened his authority as the chairman.
On July 31, Dhaka First Joint District Judge Court imposed a temporary injunction on Jatiya Party chair GM Quader, barring him from engaging in political activities.
The party leaders Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Anisul Islam Mahmud, among 10 leaders, filed the case alleging that they were expelled on July 7 by the party chief, GM Quader, violating the party’s constitution.
Later, on August 9, the Jatiya Party faced a split for the seventh time as a council loyal to senior leader Anisul Islam Mahmud elected a new central committee of the party.
The new central committee was announced through holding the 10th national conference with the participation of the followers of Anisul.
The council elected Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader as the party’s chairman and secretary general, respectively.
But followers of GM Quader did not participate in the council, terming it an ‘illegal council’.
GM Quader, younger brother of Jatiya Party founder and late army dictator HM Ershad, first elected to parliament in 1996, has served as the opposition leader in parliament and held ministerial positions in civil aviation, tourism, and commerce during the past 15 years of the Awami League regime.
