
Dhaka South City Corporation and the Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery at a programme on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure the implementation of midwifery-led sexual and reproductive health services in specific urban health centres of the DSCC.
DSCC chief executive officer Md Jahirul Islam presided over the event at the Nagar Bhaban, said a press release.
The agreement has been initiated by the United Nations Population Fund, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency and with the participation of Jhpiego Bangladesh.
The Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery will ensure technical guidance, training, workshops and professional development opportunities for midwives in urban health centres.
In addition, they will also help create permanent midwifery positions as per national policies.
On the other hand, DSCC will provide the necessary infrastructure, medical equipment and administrative support to involve midwives in urban healthcare.
In addition, it will work to develop quality and affordable healthcare for the city residents by gradually improving the quality of services and support for midwives.
On behalf of the DSCC, Jahirul Islam, and on behalf of the DNM, the organisation’s director general, additional responsibilities, Md Anwar Hossain Akand, signed the MoU.
Jahirul Islam said, ‘This MoU has opened a new horizon in protecting the health of mothers and new-borns and reducing maternal and child mortality.’
